Congratulations!
I just went through this a couple of months ago and was a bit caught out (even though I thought I'd planned everything!) because I had to stay in hospital for almost a week.
For your baby during your stay you will need:
- Nappies (the hospital will provide some)
- Cotton wool
- A few sleepsuits - hospitals are boiling hot so a single layer is all that's necessary.
To take your little one home you'll need:
- A lightweight pramsuit (unless May turns out to be really cold!)
- A hat and scratch mitts
- A small blanket to cover your precious one in the car seat
- A car seat (it's against the law for the hospital to let you leave without checking you have a car seat fitted correctly)
It might be wise to pack a small second bag and leave it at home, just in case you require a longer stay. This can have extra clothes, nappies and fresh PJs for you.
Don't forget to take some lip balm as this will really help during labour.
Good luck!

Take some diapers b/c the hospital will charge you a lot for them.
Take 3-5 onesie's - just incase you and the baby have to stay in the hospital more than a day.
Baby wipes. A few sleepers - the one's with the feet. Receiving blankets. Car seat. Might want to take a little hat to cover the baby's head.

Well i took 3 neutral babygrows (even though i was told i was having a girl) as you never know!!!
I took in
3 x neutral vests
3 x neutral Sleepsiuts/babygrows
3 pairs of scratch mittens
2 terry towlin squares (which i have used with two babies for sick cloths) Brilliant!!!
Nappies (1 x Pack)
Hat and going home outfit
Jacket /coat/cardigan, to go home in (depending on weather)
1X towel (although apparently some hospitals dont let you bath your baby there anymore for health and safety reasons).
Cotton Wool (lot's) not cotton wool balls as they are useless. Get pleated cotton wool.
1 x blanket
That is a good starter pack!
When i went into hospital i packed some pink clothes which i put into a seperate bag that i left in the car. So that if indeed i had a girl my partner could bring them in. But i had girls clothes from my last daughter. I wouldnt recomend that you buy pink with first baby. Your partner can go out and enjoy buying some girls clothes after the birth if he wants to.
I kept some spairs od nappies cotton wool etc in car.
I dont recomend any lotions or baby soaps of any knid as they take away the natural moisture from your baby's skin. just water needed. Maybe shampoo if your baby has lots of hair. but still not essential. Not all hospitals provide nappies!! (none that i know of do anyway,.) Also i bought some comfort muislin squares which mine had from the moment she was born and she loves it still. Better than dummy!
Good luck. Remember some luxuries for youeself!!!

When I had my first DD I took a whole suitcase and used virtually 5% of it!!
Next time I packed:
3 Vests
3 Sleepsuits
3 Bibs
Bootees
Scratch Mitts
Hat
Shawl/Blanket
An outfit (to bring baby home in)
Jacket (depending on weather)
Nappies
Top to Toe Wash
Towel (hospital ones are normally too well worn for babys delicate skin)
Soft cloth/Sponge
Baby Lotion (air-con is murder in hospitals)
Also if you are planning to Bottle Feed it is worth taking in your own Bottles and Formula as not all hospitals supply them.
And if you end up having a C-section you may need to stay in around 5 days so may need extra supplies!

A sweet coming home thing - maybe a coat or cardigen as it shouldn't be that cold in may (I'm assuming your in the uk!!)
About 4 vests and sleepsuits. That first poop gets everywhere so its best to have a couple extra just in case! Its not like they take up a lot of room they are so totty!
Scratch mitts and a hat.
The midwife will probably ask you for a hat to put on baby almost straight after delivery. A lot of heat is lost through the head so take your own in.
Good luck!
If you ARE in the UK, the hospital will give you nappies but begrudginly, you are expected to take your own nappies and cotton wool or wipes for changing.
They give you nothing other than formula if your bottle feeding.

socks, mittens, hats, vest, babygros, a jacket for when you leave, nappies,
my hospital provided the towels for the baby and the bedding so I didn't have to take that. When your due date is closer just ask your midwife what the hospital will and won't provide as they will be able to give you a better idea.
Also I remember taking in 2 bags one for the labour and birth time and a second for the hospital stay, this also meant that my mum could take away half the stuff so there was less to carry home when we left hospital.

all you need is an outfit to take your baby home in. do you know what you are having? I bought an outfit for a boy and girl. You also may need a blanket to wrap the baby in and one to cover her when you go outside. The hospital should give you everything else. good luck!

you will need
baby gro's about 2-3 of them
bib's about 4-5 of them
scratch mits just the one pair
a "leaving hospital" outfit
socks cos there feet are always cold
dont worry about nappies they provide them but take some to put your mind at ease if you do take at least 10
a blanket to wrap baby in on leaving
vests same amount as baby gro's and one for leaving
a hat for leaving
wet wipes or else they give you cotton wool
a towel as they may ask you to bathe baby
and on the day you know your leaving remember your carseat has to be brought to hospital for them to be discharged.
hope this helps iv had 3 kids so should know. good luck hope it all goes well and good luck for the future
