Armed with 2 grenades and a gun, a Filipino named John Ducat hostaged 31 daycare pupils inside a bus. This guy who also owns the daycare, according to the parents, the teachers, neighbors and relatives is a decent, humble person.
He has 137 children in his daycare and not one of them pays a cent.He even provides the kids meals, school supplies, pays the teachers from his own pocket, and even has a voluntary program for livelihood for the poor families in his neighborhood. He was born poor, and he worked and studied his way to where he is right now. But he never forgot to GIVE.
His demands are simple: that the Philippine government provide these kids with scholarships so that they may continue their studies; that their families be given a source of income and/or jobs, and food for these poor people. He says that he deems his actions necessary to attract the attention of the President and the authorities for them to do something about the overwhelming poverty in the Philippines.

While his stated motives were obviously admirable, he was totally wrong in his actions. People cannot go around holding other people hostage - endangering lives - to get what they want! I just read that in a similar incident in the 1980s, Ducat took two Catholic priests hostage over a pay dispute! He obviously thinks that using people like this to get his demands met is acceptable. Hostage-takers can NEVER be given-in to as the message this would sent to others would be so dangerous.

During this incident he reportedly said "You can be assured that I cannot hurt the children. In case I need to shed blood, I will not be the first to fire. I am telling the policemen, have pity on these children." This is a veiled threat! He is using the children as a human shield! He is a nut job.

However he certainly succeeded in highlighting his point. It's a shame that the government will now be torn between meeting Ducat's demands by improving the conditions for these kids and their families and thus giving into a hostage-taker, which would be incredibly dangerous. OR not giving in to Ducat's demands and leaving the kids in the situation they were in. To reiterate: If the government gives these kids their scholarships, gives their families a source of income and gives them food they will be sending the lethal message that hostage-taking works.
