Pool of problems?
Whether the Kalidas swimming pool will be reopened after the civic polls is the big question.
For Mugdha Rane, an ace swimmer, the wait has been extremely long. A member of the Kalidas swimming pool, Mughda gave up on her first love, swimming, ever since the pool shut down for repairs in August 2005. But there’s some news in store for Mugdha and other water babies like her. According to sources, the swimming pool and the recently done-up gym will be open to the public on February 5, immediately after the municipal elections.
This correspondent recently visited the pool and took a sneak peek to see whether the renovation was complete. At the time of going to press, the sawnky reception area was done up. The tiles in the swimming and diving pools had been laid well. The lights were shifted closer to the pool area. Eight staring blocks were accurately laid. And the negatives exceeded the positives.
However, there was no water in the pool. The diving board was missing. And the bathrooms had no fittings and were in a state of neglect.
The municipality has dished out Rs 1.5 crore approximately, towards the renovation of the swimming pool and had promised to get it ready six months after August 2005. One and a half years later the pool still begs completion.
Rajendra Pednekar, the complex officer, has washed his hands off this issue. “The corporation has taken up the repair work of the pool and the supervision is also being done by them. They should be able to confirm the exact date of the opening. We have no idea why it took more than six months, and the municipality should be questioned.”
Apparently, the pool is being tested for its waters. But from what Mulund-Powai Plus saw, not an ounce of water has been poured into the pool.
“In fact, it will take at least 15 to 20 days to fill the pool with 55 mlt of water, after which the water will have to be tested. Once tested, it will be certified by relevant authorities, and then the pool has to get its functional licence. All this happening before February 5 seems highly impossible,” feel sources.
Besides all through the last one and half years, there have been a handful of people working on the site. There were several months when there was no work going on. Then rumour had it that the pool was to be made open to the public in December 2006. The reception area sponsored by a private party was done up soon enough, but the rest of the pool’s restoration programme was overlooked, feel observers.
The man who is responsible for all these changes is the mayor, Datta Dalvi, himself. He suddenly decided to reopen the pool when a certain political party carried out protests a few months ago. But then this promise has also been long forgotten.
The scene is now set for the municipal elections. The badminton and table tennis courts will take over election duty for two weeks, thus depriving several potential stars of their sport. The gym and the swimming pool will wait for the municipal winners to decide its re-opening. Until then, let sports take a backseat!

I got te news from the newspaper that it will be starting from April 15 but looking at the condition, its very tough for them to reopen on the given date.
I'm also eagerly waiting for it to open.
Lets hope it opens soon.
