That happened to me once last year. I bought what I thought was oven tempered glass but when I put in the sink, it did did same thing. I know Pyrex and Corning are two types of glass cookware that can be used in the over. I guess we need to let the glass cookware cool before running water on it. Things today obviously aren't made the way they once were.
Don't hide the evidance. Tell someone what happened or find some way to replace it. I'm sure it is a common mistake. In my case the glass was mine so I had to buy something else.

Glass works excellent in the stove. However it is very important to let it cool completely before washing. Or putting in a cold sink. Never use cold water on a hot glass item or they explode. I saw someone wash a hot coffee carafe with cold water when it was still hot and it exploded in a million pieces. Be very careful.

Glass goes in the oven just fine, provided it is a dish that is supposed to go in the oven. Now should you have turned the water on immediately after removing it from the oven? Nope! Hot and cold together, scary combo. You're lucky you didn't shoot your eye out! Grins!

They make tempered glass that is okay to cook with in the oven. Usually on the bottom of cookware, it will say "oven okay, dishwasher okay, no cooktop" or "do not use in oven"...etc. Also, any time you get glass hot, never cool it off quickly. As you found out the hard way, it will crack or explode.

There are different kinds of glass made with different materials. Some are classified as "hard" and some "soft". Hard glass is made with boric acid, borex and alumina and doesn't expand and contract as much between hot and cold and is oven safe, but I still wouldn't subject it to a rapid temperature change. A couple of trademark products are Pyrex and Kimex. To read more about glass go to: http://www.bsu.edu/web/jcflowers1/rlo/lceramicsglass.htm#Hard ...Good Luck...

You can cook with glass but before you wash it let it cool first.
When you put water on hot glass, the sudden drop in temperature along with the sudden shrinking of the glass (due to the temperature drop) was too much strain and resulted in the glass breaking/cracking/or in your case booming.

Extreme temperature changes like the one you experienced will make tempered glass or Pyrex break though not in the way you mentioned. It probably wasn't oven safe glass.

Yes, glass can go in the oven. Yes you should have let it cool. Extreme temperature changes could have caused it to explode.

Just let it cool, when you poured water on it, the contraction occurred at such a fast rate, the glass could not take the stress, and tore itself apart.
