Oddly enough, YOU do!
At least, people who set interesting puzzles and questions and challenges give the inspiration to me. I never bother people with my witterings otherwise.
Oh my darling Reindeer
You fire up my brain, dear,
For you set the spark
That lights in the dark
All I want to explain here.
NOW see what you made me do!
Cheers, Steve.

Experiences. Songs and poems deal with joy, pain, love, sex, etc.through the eyes of the person experiencing certain situations. I write sometime on how I wish life or a person should or could be. To answer your question, experience brings out the poet or songwriter in me, if they are good or bad.

usually waking in the woods on my own or sitting with my wife at home. My wife might inspire Shakespeare, William Carlos Williams or Leonard Cohen while the woods might inspire Al Purdy, Dylan Thomas or Ralph Waldo Emerson. Sometimes a bit of flowery prose might escape my lips when confronted with a sunset or the nape of a soft neck. These among an infinite list of charming minutia which act like commas in my existence. No writing though. Just romantic ranting on the state of the universe and other things.

Feelings, of course. Strong feelings or inspiration, it depends. And a great urge to write.
