I only want to reinstall it from a CD, not reformatting it. Thanks in advance.

The Windows XP install will give you the option to format the hard drvie (delete ALL the data), or not to do so, and just reinstall the OS. It also gives you the option to 'repair' I believe. As someone mentioned, it may create 2 partitions that will hender performance. Best of luck!

Well, basically XP reinstall doesn't lose all the data. I've had to perform several reinstalls and My Documents folder stays intact. But here's a catch (and I'm not making a statement or anything) but with the stability of Windows you're quite likely to run into having two system folders slowing the system down. It happened several times with me, so my suggestion would be to back-up your data and do the formatting part; whatever your motives are for reinstalling, this just about might be a safer way.
Suit yourself, but in any case you need to back-up the data. You never know what's going to happen along the way.
Hope I made some sense here :)

hey.. if u go ahead and blindly reinstall the windows XP, you will loose all the data in your computer, but u have an option over there , try repairing windows xp, stil u have ur problem take a back of all the data you are having in a dvd or so.. if u dont have any dvd, copy teh data that u want and paste them on any other drive in the hard disc like D:, E: etc. .Not on the C: drive, then u will not loose any kind of data.

Depends on how you do the reinstall.

Start the regular install by booting from your XP CD. You will come to a point where it tells you that it sees an install of XP already on the PC and ask if you want to repair that install. You press the "R" to repair that install.

If you make the wrong selection along the way, it will come to a point where it ask you if you want to format or partition the hard drive. If you reach that, you missed the repair. Reboot and try again....

If you have to reinstall XP Make sure you get a portable hard drive first and backup you're files. Reinstalling will delete all of you're files.

It will delete all of your data from a reinstall. It will only keep your data if you do a repair, rather thab a reinstall.

You will not loose any data (if you do it right)
However, programs that you have loaded already will most likely need to be reloaded. The systems directory may still have the data, but the registry will loose the associations.
