Buying from "Hermit Crab Vendors" is a bad idea. The shells are almost always painted and they're sold as 'accesories' and not as pets. The shells are painted when the hermit is still in the shell and it can not only trap the hermit inside when it dries, it can kill them with the fumes.
If you want a hermit, get a non-painted, healthy looking guy from the pet store. Its a better place to buy them. I would start with a PP(carribean hermit, or purple pincher) but not an ecuadorian or strawberry as they have more demanding needs.
Good luck!

We got ours from a "cart" type shop in the aisle of the shopping mall. I don't even know if it had a name, but all the crabs were painted on their shells and they sold all accessories and everything. Just walk the mall and look for the island - type store in the walk ways.
Also, my local pet store sells them, but they do not have painted shells.
A word of advise, do not use the sand when you set up your tank. Use the rocks, either for a fish tank, or the ones they sell that also has what looks like little pieces of styrofoam in it. The sand quickly starts to smell like dead fish, but the rocks keep the smell out somehow. We learned the hard way - came home and the whole house smelled awful!
I hope you enjoy your new friends!

Don't listen to the dumb blonde Cheerleader Zygai, they need sand to bury themselves in when they molt or else they will die. If you can't clean or change their sand, don't get a hermit crab.
