Male fish are prettier and they have a different 'dance' to each other. I think they smell different to each other too

Just like with people, there are minor and sometimes major differences between males and females. Fish can tell each apart just like people can tell a boy from a girl. For them, sometimes it's colors, or fins, or size or even something we can't see but that they can... maybe even smell sometimes and in some cases we can't tell them apart and don't really know for sure how they can, but obviously they do or we wouldn't have that fish around anymore.

In aquariums, most any fishes will do their thing at any time of the year, when ever conditions are right for them. In the wild the majority breed at certain times of the year, usually spring, but there are many that breed year round.

My platies seem to mate every couple of months, and even I can tell the difference between the sexes! In the wild fish mate at certain times of the year and in a tank when the conditions are right for the species! Males tend to be more highly coloured, have flashy fins or longer tales! We can't always tell but the fish have no problems knowing which sex another fish is!

This depends on the type of fish you are asking about. Some fish like KOI breed any time while some only during certain times of the year like catfish.

The differences as well, some you cannot tell a difference like puffers, where betta's are very easy to tell just by looking at them.

All year(in warm areas)

And how do we tell eachother apart? Its the same for fish. There are hormones and different shapes and colors that even tho we dont see it the fish do. They have been doing this for hundreds of years. Dont doubt them ^.^

Little fishy miniskirts are a dead giveaway.
To answer your question it depends on the fish species.
