Banning smoking in apartment buildings in Ontario!?

Ontario Health Minister Georger Smitherman wants to open a debate about BANNING SMOKING IN APARTMENT BUILDINGS!! I FOR ONE DON'T SMOKE AND I THINK THIS IS GOING WAY TOO FAR. IT IS THEIR HOMES FOR CRYING OUTLOUD!!
THIS IS TOTAL INVASION OF PEOPLE'S PRIVACY. I RESIDED IN AN APARTMENT FOR YEARS AND NEVER SMELLED SO CALLED SECOND HAND SMOKE COMING IN FROM MY NEIGHBOR, IT IS JUST LUDICROUS TO THINK THAT IT GETS IN THROUGH PLUGS AND DRYWALL!! THIS IS WHAT THESE ANTI GROUPS THINK. THERE IS A HUGE PIECE OF CONCRETE IN BETWEEN THESE WALLS AND IT IS INCONCEIVABLE THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN. I FOR ONE CAN'T BEILEVE THAT PEOPLE ARE FALLING FOR THIS BS, AND THAT HE CAN GET AWAY WITH THIS, THIS NEEDS TO BE STOPPED BEFORE HE DECIDES ANYTHING ELSE FOR US!!WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Well first off.....Kuddos to you miss non smoking Vendettachick!! for standing up for us dog crap, loser, abusing health, rotten teeth smokers! Finally a NON smoker sees what we see. It amazes me beyond belief that never mind non smokers, just anyone!!! is just going to sit back and accept that we are being CONTROLLED by a freaked out government here!!! UHm since when did the people of this province say..."Oh yes!!! we want to vote in a government that is going to control every aspect of our life!!!! YES it is fantastic!!! We love being told what to do!! It is FUN! " Give me a fu***ing break!!! Of course people don't think that!! But this WACKED out government seems to think that we do want to be controlled!! Well news flash! WE DON'T!!!! How dare that Smitherdick idiot even suggest banning smoking in an apartment building!!?? I would love to see that day when a non smoking fanatic comes knocking on my door telling me i CANNOT smoke in MY OWN DAMN HOME!!!!!!..... I would personally knock out their pearly white teeth out !!! Dalton Madinky said " it is a slippery slope to impose on people's property when it comes to smoking in cars" so how it this any different from an apartment bulding !!???? you fanatical, pshycho, maniac, ludicrus wacho non smoking group??? You say "that us smokers should be banned period"?? It will not happen. I building can opt to be non smoking or include it in their lease agreement, however apartments are not public space, they are a private residence. The terms of rental are dictated by a landlord, not a governing body.

With legislation like that where do we draw the line. There are any number of things that can effect a persons' health in shared space. I am allergic to dogs and bees. Should I push for legislation banning my neighbours from keeping flowers as they attract bees?

Legislation such as that is largely unenforceable. Do you really think the police are going to run out on smoking calls? Not to mention they would have to catch you in the act.

As a side not in Ontario you already cannot smoke, in bars, clubs, pretty much any public space and outdoor space that is considered encloses. So a picnic tent or even a gazebo are smoke free.

Cigarettes are the leading cause of fatal fires, at least in the United States. If you own a house, you have the right to say what happens in it. You don't own an apartment. The landlord should have the right to decide if smoking is allowed - after all, he or she is the one who will suffer financially if you burn the place down. (Not to mention all of the other tenants who may be caught in a fire.)

I agree, the government should not be able to tell people they can't smoke in their own homes. However, is there is hard evidence that smoke passes into other apartments in sufficient quantities to affect the health of others? If so, then yes, they do have the right to prevent one group of people from causing health issues in another group of people. That's what the government is for - to protect the rights of the people. A smoker's right to damage his own health does not supersede a non-smoker's right to live free of smoking-related health issues. Or in the short version, smokers have the right to kill themselves. They don't have the right to kill others.

Well I for one do smoke, and I would definitely fight that one. I live in America, and in my state they are trying to pass a law to no longer smoke in bars and clubs and public places. Ok I do know some people who have asthma and can't be around smoke. I would respect it for most public places, but when it comes to bars, definitely not! That's the point of a BAR! Right? If they told me I could not smoke in my own home or car, I'd tell them to shove it! It's my choice if I smoke, if you don't want to be around it, don't come near a cigarette! I swear they are slowly taking away our rights one by one!

There are already places like that where I live. If you rent, then the landlord can have as many restrictions as they want too- including not smoking. If you rent, you're really just borrowing, you dont own.
