my 1996 mercury mystique is stalling when you slow down, or go below 25mph. last week, a part of the sparkplug dropped into the engine, but we got it out. could that have anything to do with it stalling? how do you fix the stalling problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If the stalling started after you dropped a part of a spark plug into the cylinder, it's safe to assume that in this case "after" corresponds to "as a result of". If that's the case, you probably didn't pull all pieces out which would've caused damage to the cylinder wall, piston, or a valve. One dead cylinder will cause engine to stall. The first step would be to make sure that all cylinders are functional - pull spark plug wires or better disconnect injectors one by one and observe if there is noticeable difference in engine operation for each cylinder. Start with the one you had the spark plug accident with.
Technically, on-board diagnostic system is supposed to set a misfire code in case of a single (!) miss but ford may not do that. I once drove a windstar 10 miles with a dead cylinder, and it did not set a code. I think this is done on purpose so that people wouldn't know how often they actually misfire...

you say that a spark plug broke off in the cylinder ? did you get all debris out ? if not you may want to do a compression check all cylinders should be close example (150psi +/-20) across the board

Sound like idle control valve or throttle position sensor.
