External drives were not made with the business person in mind....
You should look into adding another internal drive (they are cheaper).....Most boards have 2 IDE sockets, they can support 2 drives per socket......So you can have up to 3 hard drives and 1 cd or dvd drive installed........

I bought an external hard drive off ebay and it didn't even last a day before the fan failed. I sent it back and that the last I ever saw of it. Funny thing is the guy doesn't sell them anymore, hmmm. I bought the same external case from someone else locally along with a samsung drive which I fitted myself.

Haven't had any problems so far and my son has a habit of not switching it off. When you stop using it do you just turn it off or do you ask to stop it. Not sure if external hard drives are hot swapable where you can just disconnect them

At work we have 2 ICY BOX external hard drives, one mirrors our server and the other is a permanant back up. They are on 24 hours a day with no internal fans in them.

Hope this helps

You do not tell us what brand you have been using. Do you just purchase what is the cheapest, or did you perform a little research first to determine what met your needs? Certain vendors will pair up good hard drives with questionable enclosures which will shorten their life. If you are working mobile, you should look into the Seagate line of mobile drives otherwise purchase their desktop external drive. I built my own external drive, purchased a Seagate drive and a Vantec enclosure and it has been running for two years now (I never turn it off).

You shouldn't really be having this problem, its unusual to say the least but if you want reliable external hard drives go for the LaCie big disk, they're tough as old boots.

Usually the hard drives are pretty safe and long lasting...
Just take care of one thing that's as little formatting as possible... this increases the chances of crashing your hard drive...

it's natural.. my external hard drive also overheats.. i prevent it by disconnecting whenever it's not active.. or.. sometimes, i'll just copy the documents i need and transfer it on either drive.. then.. i will remove it right away..
