I disagree with YankeeD. I think Pavano's performance was excellent. He induced mostly ground balls and got 4 double plays. He will be one of the best #4 starters in MLB IF he can stay healthy.

As far as him pitching on opening day, it was suppose to be Wang. The spring rotation was set up that way. After Wang got hurt, the easiest way to keep the starters in their "normal" work schedule was to have Pavano start the opener.

None of this is official. But Mussina does not want to alter his routine. Pettite is not 100% healthy. Igawa is just too new to the atmosphere. And Rasner and Karstens are too inexperienced.

Afterall, it's still just one game out of 162.

The Yankees pitching rotation is a mess right now. Pettitte and Wang will be on the DL at the start of the season. Igawa is a question mark and i think even Mussina is battling some pains. I think that Yankees want to finally get Pavano some action after being hurt for three years.

I think management wants to find out right away whether Pavano is going to be an asset to them this season. As you know there has been no return on their investment to date so it's either produce now or he may be looking for work elsewhere before the all star break. Might as well find out from the get go!! He looked okay yesterday but nothing special that I could see. Best to find out in April than to go into October and have the rug pulled out from under us!!

cause pavano was a #1 starter in florida, he had that awesome year, then the yankees signed him to a big contract, but hen he got injured. he is a good pitcher but i think he should have gotten #2 in the rotation, mussina shold be #1

Because it's gonna be funny as hell seeing Pavano get knocked around and give up 8 runs in 3 innings on Monday, thats why.

idk but im a huge Yankee fan and i hate Pavano...i think he's a bad pitcher....especially the game during spring training against the Red Sox.....OMG!!! i hate him for making us lose that game. Mussina should pitch on opening day in my opinion b/c he has more experience. GO YANKEES!!!

Pettitte is in the bullpen.....hey, wait.....I'm not a Yankees fan. I can't stand 'em. I like the Texas Rangers.

I think they want to get as many innings out of him as possible before he gets hurt again. He has pitched very few innings for his money.

Because that is what an overrated team does.
