My Friend is 44, has worked as a floor sander since he was 19.
He has had his own buisness floorsanding since he was about 25, and has been working very hard his whole life
he has always lifted the machines by himself.

recently his back has been terrible, he has been getting injections and is on high prescribed painkillers but he is still in alot of pain

the doctor said the pain will never get better.

he has bills to pay, and his house to pay off, so he continues to work as a floor sander, comes home in the afternoon in so much pain. it hurts so much to see him like this.

i have suggested a career change but he is very against the idea.

He will not rent his spare rooms out, he will not cut off his cable tv .

he lives alone..

he seems depressed,

he will not talk to a career councillor or anything.

He will not be able to do this for much longer, the pain is getting worse and worse.

What is th best thing to do for someone in this situation?

Bring him to a SBA office for a business plan meeting to which they could brainstorm and maybe re-write his business plan to incorporate staff..In the meantime suggest acupuncture--it worked wonders on my back

if he has paid his taxes over the years, he should apply for SSD if not then SSI, sounds like he is unable to physically handle the job, so he may get approved for one or the other, you never know unless you try. It isn't much, but it does help. If he is unwilling to do that, then he really needs to change careers or maybe run the business and have other people doing the actual work of it.

Help him in little ways, go to his place for some times, ask him to take rest while you do his household chores, not always but sometimes you can do this, massage him if you dont feel awkward.
