There are several ways you can approach this purely depending on your comfort level of using cleaners.
Old fashioned approach, taught to me by my Grandmother - Fill the tub with about 2 inches of water, (or to the level of the dirt in your bathtub), pour good old fashioned liquid bleach in to the tub. I would pour a gallon, one big bottle of the concentrated stuff, if you put more than 4 inches in to the tub and for the 2 inches use about a half gallon, half a large bottle of the concentrated stuff. Let the bleach water sit for approximately 2 hours or until you see the stains disappear. While wearing protective gloves, drain the water and rinse thoroughly. I would then use an abrasive cleaner and rinse again.
Cleaners that I have found to work great!
Barkeeper's Friend. (Buy it where you buy Comet or Ajax) It doesn't have a nice fresh scent, but it has removed all kinds of stains off.
Mr. Clean Eraser, I have used them on all kinds of dirt and nasties on all kinds of surfaces. They work great. I haven't personally tried them on a bathtub, but I have tried them on just about every other kind of surface.
Clorox spray with Bleach works well, but it's along the same principle as my grandmother's old fashioned method with out filling the bathtub, and it doesn't seem to work quite as well.
If the dirt is just in spots try mixing a paste of four tablespoons of flour, four tablespoons of white vinegar and eight tablespoons of peroxide. Please use protective gloves. Apply the mixture to the stains. Leave for a couple of hours then scrub clean with a brush and cold water. Good luck.

Clorox Soft scrub works wondrful on old tubs.{I have one too}Just be careful and don't put it all over your tub and then try to clean it. The fumes will kill you.Squirt some in the bottom of tub ,close drain, add small amount of water and use that to scrub the entire tub.Rinse really well.By the way ,use a sponge with an abrasive{ like scotch-brite} surface to scrub with.

Although you was not specific about what kind of bath tub you have, I thought that this might be the kind you have, as you said older, try this hint to get your tub really clean. Good Luck !
Porcelain cleaners
Lighter fluid will remove most dark, stubborn stains from sink and bathtub.

one word, oxiclean. Been there done that. Just mix it with some water and let it soak for 30 min. to an hour and thne use a scrub brush. The next day bleach your tub. you dont have to order oxiclean, you can get it at dollar general sometimes and k-mart and wal-mart sell it.

I swear by Mean Green. I get it in the dollar stores. It has cleaned my microwave, floors, EVERYTHING with very little scrubbing. It even took blood out of a carpet.

first i would try a strong, abrasive cleaner and a scrub brush, like comet or Ajax, and just scrub, scrub, scrub.... if this does nothing for it you can look up "sand blasting" in the yellow pages and get it blasted
