I would try to climb Everest in a heartbeat if I were 20 years old, had the money, had no responsibilities and had knees! In 1985 I climbed 17,500 feet over Sara Umga La pass in India, and I climbed to Annapurna Base Camp and Machhapuchare Base Camp in Nepal in 1999 (about 13,500 feet), but since then I've wrecked my knees and am really too old for any more mountains, let alone Everest. I did get to fly past Everest when I was in Nepal. It is a strange feeling flying at 30,000 feet and being almost even with the top of Everest! The plane was medium sized, and bounced all over the sky because of the turbulance around Everest. I could see large amounts of snow blowing off the top. It was an exhilirating feeling being that close, and Everest is one heck of a mountain! I spent most of my youth in academia, going through medical school, so couldn't pursue many things I really wanted to, such as attempting Everest, which takes a tremendous amount of time and preparation. Climbing Sara Umga La was fantastic, however. I never had altitude sickness, and felt really good. I was at the same altitude as Everest Base Camp. I realize that climbing to 29,000 feet is a big difference from 17,500, but I know I could have done it with my determination. I really wish I could do it. You have no idea how beautiful it is up there! It's very tiring, though. We'd get up early--about 5AM--and climb for 8-10 hours. Then I'd fall asleep in my tent at 4PM. The food was simple, but I've never had better. When you're really hungry, a boiled egg is heaven! I would attempt Everest in a heartbeat if I were 20, had the money to do it, and had no other responsibilities!!!!!

Not me. I'm not a big athlete, so I wouldn't want to do all the training (or the actual climbing), plus it seems dangerous. I'd rather spend my time doing something else...like taking a cruise to the Caribbean or a trip to Disney World.

Not me. Too many people die in the attempt, not to mention all the training I'd have to do. No, I think I'd rather spend my time and money on vacation in the Bahamas.
