I cannot use the remove facility for firewall on the control panel

Never switch off the firewall, you'll be asking for trouble, you open the program and change the settings to allow messenger.

do not switch your firewall off go to control panel double click the firewall click exceptions add or tick msm

DONT switch off the firewall, give it access, usually it will ask you for this kind of thing when you first run it.
If you're using Norton, uninstall it and use ZoneAlarm, which is free and NOT crap.

you need to give msn permission to access the internet by adding it to the list of allowed applications in your firewall

If you right click on it you should have a "turn off" option
