I haven't had much luck with online airfare auctions.

Check out the Qantas web site, they always have specials going on and if you sign up for their email alerts, you can get some super low RT fares to Sydney and other Ozzie towns. I like Qantas because they hand out passenger 'goodie bags' and they serve very good vegetarian meals. Plus, Qantas is affiliated with American Airlines so conceivably you could book the whole flight through AA if you have a 'frequent flier' card.

It's a long flight over, though!

You know you need a current US passport as well as a valid Australian visa to travel to OZ. Visitors of all nationalities (except OZ & New Zealand passport holders) must obtain a visa prior to arriving in Australia. Electronic visas cost about around $25 USD. Qantas can issue them, or you can get one online with a credit card (web link below) or even from a travel agent.

Good luck and c'mon down under

:-)
