When do you think the Queen will eventually retire and hand over to Charles? More importantly do you think Charles will want to be king? I do not think it is a good idea to let one of the two boys take over. They have their lives to live and to become King will hinder them in their private lives and happiness. Do you agree with me???

Grannie Annie - I so agree with you!! Not being British I did not want to offend anybody. I love watching them on BBC Prime - BUT I do also believe it is outdated and the public has to dock up. They are there though and cannot be wished away. Thank you for your answer!!

To kja63 - thank you. A good answer! I do believe strongly that the boys should get a chance to live normal lives. Although as some people say they were born to do the "job" - just as much they cannot help for being born a royal now can they? So why not give them the chance!! One thing people cannot take away from Diana - she raised her two boys well!! Normal and with open minds!!

According to tradition (and Her Majesty is nothing if not traditional), when she dies the crown will go to Charles. Like his great grandfather, he will not have a long reign, but he WILL be king unless he predeceases his mother.

William will come to the throne after his father's demise. The real question will be whether or not the Brits WANT to keep their monarchy and have Wills be king.

As for light duties, PUHLEEZE! On her free time, Her Majesty goes to the bathroom. Her days are scheduled to the minute for a year in advance. So are Phillip's, Charles' and pretty much all the royals. Even their so-called vacations are structured to permit various state appointments, visits, etc.

As a career it has its perks, but yours truly wouldn't be a royal no matter HOW much wealth was in it. I prefer to have my time on earth to be at MY disposal, not everyone else's.

The Queen should be good for at least another 10 years. By then, Prince William will be married and will have started a family. If the Queen is smart, she will pass Prince Charles and Camilla over and seat Prince William on the throne.

Addition: I've read the other answers that came after me, which said that Charles should ascend the throne once the Queen dies in order to give his sons more time to live their lives. Those answers were better than mine! They're right :-)

Cant see the queen standing down, so when she does finally die, Charles will probably will be kind for a few years until William is a bit older. William is way to young at the moment and needs to learn how to live before he can rule this fantastic country.

I think the Queen will abdicate when Hell freezes over. I've often thought she *should* skip over Charles (and for a while British public opinion seemed to agree), but it does seem unlikely. For a funny look at this, go here:

The boys 'lives' are to one day become king. It is what they were raised for.

When Elizabeth steps down and Charles becomes king I think he will only be king for a short time. Some do not like him and he knows that and will eventual hand over the thorn to William.

The Queen does not have the final say about who succeeds her, Parliament does. In any event if the Queen is dead, how does she know? The line of succession is Charles, William, Harry, Andrew, etc. and it would take an Act of Parliament to change it.

Nowadays the Queen doesn't have a lot to do- it's not a very demanding job, so she will probably keep the title until she dies. Then Charles will take it for as long as the country seems to accept Camilla as Queen, or whatever she calls herself. Being King wont really be much different to being Prince- he'll still be doing the same stuff.

she will never retire, and Charles will become king eventually, he has been groomed for the job all of his life, and probs thinks like you the boys need to have a bit life first so will take the position gracefully

She won't retire and Charles would like to be King, I think he would want to give his sons a bit of time to grow before he placed such a responsibility on them.

I do not think she should retire. Charles should become king AFTER her death and William AFTER Charles death. That is the correct way of things.
