I have 256MB RAM on my desktop. But in the general tab of "my computer' properties it is shown 248MB and in the boot setup it is shown that shared memory is 8MB. What is exactly this shared memory? How can I change this shared memory?

Shared Memory is memory allocated to the display chipset to enable it to display faster
if you want to change it on startup press either DEL or F2 depending on your PC type go to something like ....chipsets there you will see AGP******* choose it
then it will display some properties on on the list is Shared Memory ...try to change it to maybe 32MB
good luck !

your memory is being shared with the onboard graphics and your probably better off leaving it as 8mb. but if you want to change it then you'll have to go into the bios then intergrated periphials. but you might just want to upgrade your ram to 512mb or more, especially if your running win2000 or xp.

that you may have to do from BIOS but if it's something that causes windows to say that you virtual memory is too low then try this: start > control pannel > preformance and maintenace > system > advanced tab > settings under preformance > advanced tab > change under virtual memory > than set a custom size of minimu 780 and max to 1084... try that....
