Basic stuff gets used anyways so things like vests and babygrows are good and needed. I agree with above that a size bigger is a good idea as they get so much newborn stuff that babies grow out of quick. If i were you i would buy a pack of vests, a cute outfit like dungarees etc and some sleepsuits (babygrows) I would get them in 6-9 months.
P.s i would also be tempted to buy green or red etc. I get sick of blue for a boy and pink for a girl!

Here is what I usually buy:
A packge of size 2 diapers
diaper wipes
lotion
baby shampoo
a box of nursing pads (Almost no one ever thinks of these)
a teething ring
The list is endless. Just take a stroll through the baby aisle.
Other things that are always used or use a lot of:
Onesies (those snap t-shirts) get different sizes
sleepers (footie pjs)
gowns (like a long t-shirt that ties at the bottom)
rash ointment
teething medicine
socks
booties
a package of cloth diapers, a plastic pant & safety pins
burp pads
bibs

A couple of people have already had good ideas. A basket of everyday products would be really good. You should never underestimate how many baby wipes you go through....shocked the life out of me !
I also asked my friends who wanted to buy baby clothes (some people just can't resist them!), to buy them in size 3-6 months or 6-9 months. Having to replace all of your baby clothes every 3 months can prove very expensive, and at that point you're no longer receiving as many gifts as your 'new baby' novelty has worn off for many people.
Hope this helps.

Diapers, wipes and batteries! These are the items the new parents go through faster than ever - I can't keep them in the house long enough. Baby swings, bouncer chairs etc. all take C or D batteries. I love when someone is thoughtful enough to bring some over.

Soft toys are nice as the baby will get use out of them for years and the parents will be reminded of you. Do check that the toy is suitable for a new born - I was given cuddly toys that my baby isn't supposed to play with until she's 3!
And don't forget mum - buy her some flowers and/or chocolates - she might be feeling in need of some attention too.

You could either put together a little hamper with all the daily things mum uses and gets through quickly or maybe a little keepsake like a first curl box or first tooth box. I was given a plaster cast "Baby's handprint" gift which I made up when my daughter was 6 months old and now hangs in my living room

The present I loved the best was a sturdy basket that my sis-in-law filled with diapers on one side and essenials like lotion, wash, diaper rash cream, baby oil, wipes, some onesies, and some sleep and plays on the other. I still use this basket to keep up with baby care things. I also recieved a medicine kit for infants that was very handy. It came in a small zippered bag that fits in your diaper bag. I saw them at Wal-Mart for $15. My sis is having a shower in two weeks I am getting her a pack of diapers and a nightgown and maybe some scrap booking things. My friend had a diaper and book shower. She had everything she needed so she requested only diapers and baby books. Also "diaper cakes" are adorable and if you are crafty, you could even make one yourself. Here's a link to one if you don't know what one is:

Diaper wreaths are fun too:
