They can - but must start from the 1st or 3rd qualifying stage(3rd if the finish 3rd or 4th in England,Spain or Italy, 3rd in Germany Portugal France )

I think the same happens with teh UEFA Cup winner s if they dont qualify for it - unless they qualify for the Champions League

Only time in years is Liverpool

NO. If you remember that time Liverpool won the champions League but finished 5th at premier league, there were many discussions about that and finally UEFA decided to let them participate in the next chamipions league by starting from the 1st preliminary round. (there are 3 rounds before the group competitions). At that time UEFA stated that it was the first and Last time they acted like this and that thing will never happen. So even if a club wins the cup, the only way to participate the next champions league is to finish the domestic league in the position which meet UEFA expectations.

Yes. When Liverpool won the Champions League but also finished 5th, the rule was modified to allow the winner back in even if they do not finish in the Champions League places that their respected league offers.

the winner of the UEFA Champions' League can take part in the next edition. as for Liverpool in 2005, they were given dispensation by UEFA to defend their title but they have to qualify from the first round. after 2005, UEFA have clarified that the winner of the UEFA Champions' League can defend their title on the following season.

yes, liverpool is the perfect example, but i think for this year they had changed the rules to make the champion to be part from the group stage and not from the very first round

LOL, you answered your own question.

As in the case of LFC, that team has to go through the qualifiers if it win the CL in the previous edition but finished beyond the top 3 or 4 of its domestic league table.
