You can only smell it after it sits there and desolves for a while and the water starts to turn brown. It also depends on wheather or not the poo is a floater or a sinker. You can smell a floater because it is partially exposed at the surface. I'm sure that animals with a really good sense of smell can smell it, like a shark or a dog.

i can smell poo faintly if it is under water and my head is out of the water but not if my head is in the water
