x^2 + x^2 = 2x^2.

x raised to the power two when added to itself gives twice x raised to the power two.

(x^2)(x^2) = x^4.

x^2+x^2
2x^2

x^2(x^2)
x^2*x^2
x^4

When adding you add the x's and leave the exponent the same. When multiplying, you multiply the exponent and leave the x's the same, unless you have a constant in front of the x's.
