In my back field I have a huge number of these weeds growing. They have one stalk straight up, resemble raspberry canes, but they are covered with the meanest thorns I've ever seen. They grow densly, and return every year, even after having mowed them down. Any idea what type they could be?

I know what your talking about, I think there a type of Thistle. They are nasty. You need to either dig the roots out, or use a chemical on them.If you don't do any thing with your field, try a vegetation killer. The only thing is ,everything will be dead for about three years. The more you mow them down, the more they will grow. It spreads the seeds. Call the Agriculture Department's Information Desk, and ask what is the best thing to use for Thistles. Good Luck, Your real luck to have so much land. Your one fortunate Person!Bye

It's hard to say without seeing them and your location could give a clue too. Most briars bear fruit or flowers but there are a couple of types called names like False Rose and False Berries. Mowing them is ok but they will keep returning. You can burn the field to get them stopped almost completely.

Don't burn. If this is also somewhere close to the field it will reseed & grow faster then the grass can restart. If you mowe it like your yard it should die out after a while. You can also spot treat with weed killer or kerosine.

Maybe a blackberry??
Maybe a wild rose. Do they bloom? Both the blackberry and wild rose blooms. Both have wicked thorns.
