It depends on whether you are talking about long-term or short term goals.

The short term purpose of studying is, simply enough, to pass the test or exam. That is a not inconsiderable goal, since admission to many programs and, thus, future careers depends on marks.

A medium term goal would be to learn the subject, both as a stepping stone to future courses and programs of study, but also for whatever worth and pleasure the subject may bring. It is better and more pleasant to know than to not know.

A long term goal is to train the brain to learn and retain useful information so that it can be accessed when needed. This is not done overnight, but requires time and practise over a range of subjects in order to do it efficiently.

The purpose of studying is being a more intelligent person, that you can think for your own, that you have your own opinions and ideas, besides a good preparation give you more job opportunities, more alternatives and better jobs with better payments.

To learn and expand your knowledge in the various subjects, to pass exams and advance in your chosen career.

to figure out what you enjoy learning about

if don't learn, you won't figure that out

if you do learn, you might find some things you especially like learning about

then you get to have lots of fun learning those things

also, can sometimes lead to earning money

so you do well in your exams! right now i am studying..ALOT coz im in the middle of exam week! :S.. if i didnt study i wudnt get very far in life! studying is a key 2 success!

I think if it's for a paper i would let children answer it to fully get their concept.
