3 freinds gone to buy a watch of $ 45 by giving $ 15 each. They buy it from a shop where servant was present. When the shop owner came he told servant that watch cost $ 40 so go and give them $ 5 back. Servant was confused that how to give $ 5 to 3 person equally, so he take $ 2 and give $ 1 to each, now the watch cost to the one person = $14 (15 -1) so the three person gave $ 42 (14 X3) and $ 2 were taken by the servant so the watch cost = $ 44 (42+2) then where did $ 1 gone as the sum payed by 3 friends was $ 45.

When the Servant returned a $1 to the three people, the total price paid then was $42. The watch cost $40 and the Servant keep $2, making it a total of $42.

The $1 is brought about by calculation, but it does not apply to what is happening in the sale.

So the total paid was $42 and not $45.

After the servant had given back $3 to the three friends, the watch cost was $42. This is because they had paid more than the correct amount because the servant kept some of the change. Therefore, the amount they had paid each (for a $40 watch) was $14, or $42 in total. The $2 they had overpaid for the reduced price watch was the amount the servant had kept. The original watch cost was $42 plus the change the three friends received. The discrepancy is in adding the cost to the three friends and the profit to the servant. Out of the original $45 given over, if $2 was taken by the servant, then each friend took away the value of $40/3 (as the share of the watch) plus change of $1 each. This makes a total of $14.333 for each friend OUT OF the transaction. Total out of the transaction = $14.333 * 3 plus the servant's $2 = $42.999 + $2

I agree with u till the part where u said that 3 persons gave $42 (14*3). Then add $1 each for the three persons (the change) and you get $45

Therefore:
$42 paid by three friends ($2 of which were taken by servant)
$3 change ($1 each)

Hope I helped :)

:-) you made me smile...
you were correct with the first part... but that's the trick... you should not be adding the $2...the watch costs $40. each person gave $14 therefore $14 x 3 = $42 less the $2 which is with the servant so the watch costs $40. there is no $1 lost.
very tricky...

here:

The cost of the watch is 40. They get 1 dollar back each which is 43. Servant has 2 dollars which is now 45. This is how much they gave the servant in the first place so nothing is missing.
