It's basically what you want versus what you need. When you're young you tend to cling to what you want. You do not have the perception that what you want is actually not what you need.
When you mature you begin to go more for what you need instead of what you want. You become aware of the difference between the two concepts.
When I was 17 I applied to military school and I got accepted. It is very hard to get the acceptance; I was almost almost tempted to go for it. Both of my parents were against it. Later after I finished college, I served in the army and I was grateful I went for the university degree instead. Now I'm glad I'm not stubborn and I listened to my parents.

Love, experience, wisdom are all good answers...however, I don't beleive that they know more about your own self than you do...but they have a pretty good notion of what has worked in their life and they mainly prefer that you take the safe path (or basically their prefered path) regardless of how it may apply to you and your happiness. And they don't take into consideration that you have to experience things on your own in order to attain the same conclusions/wisdom of life.
What annoys us the most is that they are usually right.Glad it worked out for you buddy....

My parents never cared enough. they were too busy trying to win a losing battle with each other. Who I am today is purely out of own trial and error, and some of you might agree the result aint that bad :-)
