First buy a copy of the standard.

There are many variations of ISO 9001, depending on business type. So unfortunately one structure does not fit all organizations. Most organizations “benchmark” or emulate the systems of their competitors or customers. Also specific industries (like medical device) have their own guidance documents that are harmonized to ISO9001. If you decide to pursue certification, your registrar (TUV, BSI, UL and a few more) will play a key role in how your systems will be constructed.

Your registrar is partially a judge of your system, verifying that the practices you’ve defined satisfy the standard. The registrar is also a partner, identifying weaknesses in your current practices and suggesting ways to improve.
