Melbourne for me:
.city is well laid out and easy to get around
.its the sporting capital of Australia ie rugby(storm) Aussie rules, cricket, formula 1 grand prix, melbourne cup/spring carnival (horse racing),super bikes at phillip island.
.great resturants and cafe scene.
.cool bars and a great night life
.a city known for having different things on all round the year
.voted a head of sydney as most livable city in Australia.

note: Sydney is like a show bag-looks great on the outside but on the inside is actually just full of crap. lol :)

It depends what you are looking for in a city. Perth is laid back and fun, Adelaide is Artsy and quiet, Melbourne is football mad and commercial, Sydney is big but not too much happening mostly but the zoo and the ferry, Brisbane is for fun and sun and theme parks, Darwin is the gateway to Kakadu and the top end, Hobart is historic. Have fun wherever you go...Australia is all great.

Sydney. It is the biggest and the best - it has everything. Melbourne tries but doesn't quite make it.
