Place a piece of masking tape over where you want to drill. Put the drill on the point and give it a little tap just enough to mark the glaze on the tile under the tape, then quite firmly drill, slowly to start......Dead easy never cracked a tile yet and have 3 bathrooms...
Alternatively get a workman to do it......

Using a level mark a faint horizontal line on the tiles with a pencil, stick some masking tape on the tiles ( this doesn't stop the tiles fro me cracking it just stops the drill bit from moving & scratching the tiles ) mark the holes where the brackets are to be fixed. You then drill the holes using a masonry bit but don't use the drill on hammer untill you get through the tile, insert wall plugs and fix the brackets, fit the shelf "job done" ( sit down, glass of wine in hand & pat yourself on the back )

Forget all the tips about using masking tape and a masonery drill. The easiest way to accurately drill through the tile is to use a GLASS drill (obtainable at good toolshops) The surface of a ceramic tile is made of glaze which is glass. Drill through the tile only with the glass drillbit then change toa masonery drill to go into the plaster / brickwork. When fitting the plastic wallplug, push it just below the surface of the tile; otherwise as it expands when insertting the screw it can crack the tile.
Good luck, it's not difficult.

Yes. A good bit of advice is to stick a bit of masking tape where you want to hole to be.
This is because tiles can be slippery and the drill will slip along the tile and scratch it when you start drilling.
Just stick the tape, then mark on it where the hole will be in pen like normal.

You will need a good hammer action drill and a quality masonry drill bit. Start the drill with the hammer action off until you have pierced the tile glaze and then you can use the hammer action to run through the rest of the tile. If however the wall is not solid i.e plasterboard, keep the hammer action off of it might pop the tile from the wall.

Put a piece of masking tape over the spot you want to drill. Drill a small pilot hole, then move up to the drill size you require.

Just take it easy dont press too hard or the bit will slip , then use a small bit first then enlarge it to the size you want , make sure the rawlplug goes right through the tile or it will split as you tighten the screw !!

no one has said you must use a masonary drill. save mess use the hoover to suck as you drill. or tape an envelope just under the proposed site of hole this will catch all the bits and dust,
