You could elaborate a bit more. It is difficult to answer to such a generalized question. What poor people? If the problem is only for them being poor you were not stupid at all to mix with them. If there are other problems you should ask a more specific question.

You are stupid to see them as poor. You are wise beyond your years to see that money can not buy such values such as familie ties. People stick together when they are poor. You get people who have more importance in love than $$$$.
