I heard that after the recall hit the press, they fed the various dog foods to a number of dogs and something like 7 out of the 10 died, so they "confirmed" that the food should be taken off the shelf. Is that really true? If so, is anyone (i.e. PETA) making this public or making an issue of it? I find it almost too cruel to believe, especially that they would allow the public to know this info.

Recall of Pet Foods Manufactured by Menu Foods, Inc.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been informed that Menu Foods, Inc., a private-label pet food manufacturer based in Streetsville, Ontario, Canada, is recalling all its "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food produced at its facility in Emporia, Kansas between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. The products are sold in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The recall was prompted by consumer complaints received by the manufacturer and by tasting trials conducted by the manufacturer. There has been a small number of reported instances of cats and dogs in the United States that developed kidney failure after eating the affected product. To date, Menu Foods, Inc. has reported 14 animal deaths to the FDA. Nine cats died during routine taste trials conducted by the company. Consumers reported deaths of four cats and one dog. The firm has undertaken extensive testing of the pet food products in question, but to date has been unable to find the source of the problem

So it seems to be true, but it was 9 cats that died during testing.

I hate to say it, but with the number of irresponsible pet owners out there who don't spay or neuter their animals, there will always be a large supply of unwanted animals available for testing. It's sad...but no more sad than the animals being destroyed in an animal control facility...at least the ones used for testing died for a cause, the ones killed at the pound die because of lazy people.

It sounds like an internet rumor. I'm sure you can contact Menu Foods (a Canadian company) and ask them.

NO!!! They took cans of the food and sent them to a lab. 7 out of 10 of the SAMPLES came back with the poison in it, that's how they confirmed it. Rest easier now!!! DOGS RULE!!!
