Here are to two examples:
1) If someone came up to you off the street and told you a story about some crazy old woman who killed 756 people and the only way you could survive is if you told all your friends about her!
2) If someone came up to you off the street and gave you and ice-cream and said 'If you eat this you'll get $1000'.
Would you believe them?
Of course not! You'd probably think THEY were the crazy ones.
Frankly, most people just think chain letters dont work because they are just too far-fetched and get too many of them.

Here are four sites dedicated to chain letters and explaining the flaws.
Read carefully.
http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2002/02/eileenspam1.htm has six court cases.
http://rickconner.net/spamweb/chainletteranalysis.html explains the flaws in chain letters in a way simple enough for a grade school student to comprehend.
http://www.stopspam.org/usenet/mmf/mmf_variants.html goes over the numerous lies and deceptions chain letter authors use.
and http://www.silcom.com/~barnowl/chain-letter/bibliography.htm covers the history of chain letters, including the events in 1935 that resulted in their being ruled a felony.

because its just like any other threats...
if i were to say everyone who eats ice cream today and doesnt put a cherry on top is going to break their leg doesnt make it so....
words.. or wishes.. have no real power to create actual events.
