The main difference between dating in Japan and dating in many other nations is that the Japanese do not talk a lot about it. A Japanese person may tell their close friends, but they often don't want everybody to know about it. Dating is a private matter, and public displays of affection are very rare. Japanese couples rarely hold hands in public, and actions like kissing in public are almost unheard of.

In the United States, on the other hand, teens typically tell a lot of people and couples will walk around together and tell people about their dates, because typically, Americans enjoy having their relationship known. In America, if the boy or girl wants to keep the relationship a secret, the other will often get offended and think that they are embarrassed. In Japan, it's the opposite. If someone in the relationship decided to announce to everyone that they are dating, the other person would be embarrassed.

It's pretty unique in Japan cuz people don't go on "dates" like they do in the States. A guy or a girl tells the other person they like him/her, then they are officially in a relationship, then start dating. The informal looking around kind of dating doesn't happen as much.
