Hi Mee mee, 2 things can prompt this -:

1) A small/new tank. Crunched for space, they are just establishing themselves.
2) Since you said they've never done it before, it most likely is the impulse to mate - ensure temp is between 28-30 degrees c.

Id keep an eye on them,I had a goldfish a while ago that turned cannibal and ate the rest of the tank (seriously!)

That is a tricky question. FIrst off are they male and female? this could be that the female has matured and can now produce eggs.

Secondly: They could be viaing for tank space and or food.

If you have a male and female, it is more than likely the first.

My fish do that too, normally after being feed they are just chasing each other.
