This will help you as you connect it to one of your usb connections and can get more ports out of it. Usually about 4. Have a look at this site if you need any more information:

USB is designed to have many devices on one cable.

The original idea was to have each device with one in plug and one out, so you can chain them together. But very few devices were built like this.

So, often you need more USB ports. There are several ways to do this.

You may already have more. Maybe 2-4 at the front of the computer and 2-4 at the back. So check to see if you don't already have enough.

Next you can buy a hub, which allows you to connect many together. The is a device where you can plug several more devices in. There are really cheap, but don't buy one that is too cheap you may find it unreliable (my friend bought the cheapest she could find, but it doesn't work properly).

One cool device is a keyboard which is also a USB hub, so you can plug several devices into the keyboard.

Yes, a USB Hub can be added to your computer. Hubs comes as stand along or the type that you need to plug into your electrical power point. I would go for the power hub myself. You can also add a USB card to your computer that way you do not need extra cords and they are hidden at the back of your computer out of sight. Any USB cord should be kept to under 6 feet in length. USB hubs are fairly low cost to buy as are the USB cards. Good luck.

yes a USB hub is a easy answer, the thing to look out for is USB speed, get a USB 2.0 hub for future proofing (1.0 USB hub may not work with all gadgets and has a slower connection for transferring information).

i recently bought a 7 port USB hub for about £25.00, i do recommend getting a 7 port as opposed to a 4 port as it gives you more space to add stuff.

expect the USB hub to need to be connected to the mains, have you got a spare socket to plug into?
if not then maybe get a new extension lead at the same time (and if you arent using a Surge protected lead then definately get one)

most pc's now come with at least 6 usb ports, 4 back and 2 front, usually they also come with an internal add on to give 2 more.
what a lot of people fail to realise is that usb ports are 'allowed' a certain amount of power and this is then split amongst the ones on the hub.
a lot depends on the power needs of what you are adding (web cams use a lot for example) i would recommend a self powered hub rather than one that connects just with a usb cable.
make sure any higher powered devices are connected to the pc, use the hub for lower powered devices.

USB hubs are definately the right thing to go for. Just keep in mind the amount of extra USB ports you need and the length of the cable connecting the USB hub to your PC.

You could either buy one with a long cable for flexibility, or a smart one which directly gets plugged into your system

You can either get a USB hub which will share the current ports you have or you could get an internal card that would give you extra USB ports as well. Personally I'd prefer that option a a space saver!

If you go to Currys digital(formally dixons) or a maplin electronics you can buy a belkin usb hub for nix to nothing. I only have two usbs in my laptop so i bought the belkin usb hub which in total gave me five. Its not very big either so space won't be an issue. It makes life much easier.
hope this helps.
