The geometric (or log) mean is used to summarize data that may have a few high or low values that would skew an arithmetic mean.

The geometric mean differs from the arithmetic mean in that data are transformed to log values before averaging. By taking the log of the values, significant differences in scale between them are "smoothed" out.

Once the average is calculated, the antilog is then taken.
