Think Tarzan, a story of a lone young human boy raised in the wild. Only this time, it's in the city in a post-apocalyptic setting where humankind is virtually extinct.

Raised by stray animals, he has to choose whether to be human and help save some animals dying out without the food that humans used to produce or let nature take its course in an urban setting where some species are bound to die out.

P.S. What would be a good way to almost eradicate all of mankind but leave the animals behind? No one say the Great Flood.

It's an interesting concept, but the conflict needs some work... why would he have enough food to make a difference, and if he does have it, why would he hesitate to use it? Maybe you just couldn't make that clear in the brief summary...

As for killing of humans - I'd have to say virus. Most viruses are species-specific, so a virus could kill of all humans and not harm animals. How about an air-born, very aggressive variety of AIDS? That's an actual future possibility that people worry about today.

You could have some people be immune (there are always some with any virus.), and use that to explain the survival of a handful of people, including your protagonist.

If I was a publisher I'd say next.

Post-apocalyptic story where a man is raised by animals?

What part of the story is original?

And where is the conflict? Why would he even need to choose? And it's not like he'd be able to provide enough food for any animals for long, he'd only be delaying the inevitable.

That was already kind of done - 12 Monkeys with Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt - the animals more or less ran free in NYC .. But your concept is interesting - would need a lot of work - characterization, research on why mankind disappeared, etc and a lot more plot. But write yourself some character studies and an outline and see where it takes you. Pax - C.

could be interesting.

What could cause this? Perhaps poison gas gone wild that only affects humans. Somehow, this young man's genetic predisposition protects him alone from the aftereffects of the gases.
