Hi dimbut,
Britain certainly had coastal defense weapons, but certainly no artillery that could fire across the channel. The weapons at the Imperial War Museum a previous answerer mentioned could never reach a distance of over twenty miles.

EDIT FOR DIRK...
I don't dispute your comments, and I applaud your research. I was addressing two specific and limited points:
1. Whether the guns at the IWM were capable of firing cross-channel (I promise you they couldn't). They were naval weapons, not land based.
2. Whether Britain had two guns at the channel capable of reaching France (I promise you they didn't. Not between 1914-1918).
I never said that Britain didn't have long range artillery; I merely stated that it wasn't deployed on the Dover Coast.
Cheers, mate.

Yup - the two guns in question were put there on the orders of Winston Churchill. He named them Winnie and Pooh [Winnie being his own nickname]. The guns could shoot anything in the English Channel but not sure if their reach was as far as France, some 22 miles away. The Imperial War Museum should be able to help you further with this. Otherwise, see if you can find the website for Dover Castle.

Dismantled and destroyed after the second world war.
The guns outside the IWM are 15inch guns, one from the Battle Cruiser Renown and the other from one of the Monitors that fought at Operation Neptune (D DAY for those that dont know)
The guns used in the emplacements at dowver where mainly 9 inch wepons to fire into mid channel, but behind on mobile train carrages there was at times a couple of 14 and 15 inch heavy guns that where used as counter battery fire against the German Rail guns shelling Dover area.

In WWII the Royal Marines Siege Artillery provided two guns at Dover one called Winnie and the other Pooh.Winnie was installed first and fired the first shell to hit Europe from England. They where later backed up by three railway guns called Gladiator,Sceneshifter and Peicemaker. The guns were too in accurate and slow to hit shipping and were put there on direct orders of Winston Churchill to counter German guns firing from France.I know of no WWI guns though.
