your stomach starts to fully absorb any pill you about two to four hours after you first swallow the pill (shorter if you took it on an empty stomach, and longer if you had a full stomach, also longer for extended release pills, and shorter for quick dissolve pills)... it fully works it's way into the blood stream after about six to eight hours...

so take the pill at 10 in the morning, you can have all the guilt free fun you want by 6 in the evening

Many will say 24 hours, but I think it's best to wait a full 72 hours. The pill doesn't work instantly... no medication does. It needs time to work its way through your blood stream.

If you're not wanting to wait that long and/or you're not in a monogamous relationship, a condom should be used regardless of whether you're on the pill.

my doc told me that you should still use another form of contraception (ie. condom) as well as the pill until your next period.

It should start right away if you took it right. Worked for me!
