Before alarm clocks, the majority of people farmed for a living. The rooster crowing and the sun rising got people out of bed. People who did not farm were able to wake up when they needed with sheer mental power. Our minds are incredibly powerful. We are highly intelligent and adaptable beings. I am able to wake up within five minutes of a time I select the night before. I think we all can. Utilize the power within!

Once upon a time ago, the alarm clock was called a rooster.
People either got used to waking up in response to a rooster's errr errrr erhhhh erh arrrrrhhhhh, or they would simply condition themselves to wake ups as the sun rose.
I can't do that myself, you can probably have a rooster in my room singing and a person flashing a light to my eyes. Really, unless I hear the radio station going off, Ill will probably stay asleep.
As for the very first comment above, I suggest that you don't drink water before going to bed, unless you want to wake up and feel the moist of your bed sheets spread all over. lol, little wonder why our forefathers often peed in bed.

Probably the hustle and bustle of the city would wake people up. And they had grandfather clocks, I assume.
But I know that I wouldn't get up in time without an alarm!

I relatively have not used an alarm clock to rouse for six years. I relatively have a doggie who wakes me up around 6:30 each and every morning. Works great. human beings over the years are knowledgeable via sounds and mild-weight to rouse-until you're completely out of it and sleep via it!

People before 1847 woke up more easily because the standard of living was much lower. The bedroom was not as comfortable as nowadays (bedbug?) and they needed to labor to earn a living. The urge of survival made them wake up. Once it became a habit, it was even easier to wake up because their body was already biologically timed and automated.

Sunrise, rooster crow, I'm sure some people overslept. A lot of people can train their body to naturally wake up at the same time everyday.
