I listen to most music of the western hemisphere. Recently, I've been listening to about 8 versions of Erik Satie's "Gymnopedies #1". There are a couple of Jazz versions, a couple of versions using harp and strings (the original was just piano), a version with horns (Blood, Sweat and Tears), a couple of versions with piano and flute, and one arranged for orchestra by DeBussey. Oh, one of the versions uses a harmonica.
A few weeks before that I was listening to a lot of Garbage (the group, okay?) mixed in with Goldfrapp, some No Doubt/Gwen Stephanie. Before that it was probably a lot of songs from the '80's, mainly from soundtracks ( I really like the '80's) like "Streets Of Fire", "Eddie And The Cruisers", "Howard The Duck", "Blade Runner", "The Terminator" (got a really nice romantic track in it, seriously), "Sixteen Candles", "St. Elmo's Fire", "Breakfast Club", "Real Genius", "The Fabulous Baker Brothers" (which has 2 tracks where Michelle Pfeiffer is actually singing).
I was doing a lot of Beethoven (particularly the 9th Symphony)and Schubert (so sad, so poignant in "Ständchen") not too long ago.
Also recently bought some Diana Ross stuff from the late '60's, along with some Marvin Gaye/Tammi Tyrell, Dusty Springfield and Dionne Warwick.
But, I also bought a bunch of Kinky Friedman And The Texas Jewboys, Johnny Cash, Marshal Crenshaw, Jimmy Buffet, etc., to go along with my Emmylou Harris, Alison Krause, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Hank Williams, Sr., Elvis Presley (and Costello), etc..
And sometimes I listen to Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Rickie Lee Jones, Joni Mitchell, Flora Purim, Dean Martin and the Big Bands. Really like the Smooth Jazz of Keiko Matsui and Soul Ballet.
Then I revisit high-school daze with some Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Stones, Doobie Brothers, Dan Hicks And his Hot Licks, Robin Trower, Mott The Hoople, early Springsteen, etc..
Or, if I feel like I need to touch base with the "kids", I listen to some "The Killers", or "Coldplay". Got a couple of Fall Out Boy CD's I need to check out. Didn't care so much for My Chemical Romance. Might like it better when I'm in a darker place.
Got into operatic arias a couple of years ago. Still don't understand most of the Italian or German. Some of the French I learned re-surfaced, though. But it's not so much the words as it is the feeling you get. I like sopranos.
Where does one stop? Here and now for me. I have a lot of other unmentioned music but I have to go to work at some point....
