Which type of criminal you have no mercy for?

This is NOT going to be a popular answer... I've read some of the others, and feel I have to add another perspective. My apologies in advance for the soap box.

There are few that I have no mercy in my heart for. The ones that really get under my skin and make me want to shout and rant and rave and be violent are people who hurt kids. I have very low tolerance for people who perpetuate crimes against children (and against the elderly as well).

I have many in my life (me included) whose lives have been affected and deeply harmed by violence when they were children. This violence (be it sexual, mental, emotional, or physical) has made their lives a struggle, affected their personal relationships, and in some cases been the trigger for life long mental health issues. This is a *wounding* that no amount of raving, ranting, or violence can change.

So how do we change it? I believe there is a call to heal both victim and perpetrator. The process for this varies by individual. And there are some, the "true pedophiles," whom I believe cannot be changed. Others there may be hope for.

There IS HOWEVER a great number of people who keep passing on the dysfunction, who wound because they know no other way. If these people can accept the horror of what they've done (as I am not certain there is EVER a way to make amends) then I believe there is a hope that behaviours can be changed. These folks are both victim and perpetrator, and while I cannot imagine doing the things they've done, I personally have to have a wee bit of compassion for them in my heart. I do not believe that the person who so hurt me as a child would have done so had he not been so harmed himself.

It is a VERY complex issue, and not one that has any easy or simple answers. Too many variables. All I know is that we have to find a way to STOP the cycle of child abuse. As for me, it is something that I will NEVER pass on. I am healthy and whole (though that trust thing still needs some work!).

I don't mean to be controversial but well God, I'll tell you what. After reading this thread the type I have the ~most~ mercy for are pedophiles. It seems like most people came in here with something on their mind, saw children listed in the first few responses and thought oh yeah, can't leave that one off. Mob mentality scares me.

I think our country has some sick perspectives on age and sex. Statutory rape is a horrible term to me, since rape, by definition I feel, should be non-concentual. How many of you are willing to say that at 16 'you just didn't know what you were doing and shouldn't have been allowed to legally make your own choices'? And how many of you who agree with that statement now say it 'cause you have kids and fear for them but would've rallied against the idea at the age of 16?

And I'll tell you something else that scares me folks - so much of the suffering around pedophilia is caused by our belief and assertions about it. Any physical pain thrust upon a being is wrong in my eyes. Making someone go through a situation they don't want to, painful or not, equally so. But make me 1 year old again and have someone touch me this way and that, and great thanks. I'll probably enjoy it up until society teaches me that I need to be dependant on them for all of my views and what's been happening to me is actually very sick and wrong and somehow reflects on me.

And as a final note, I'd just like to say screw all you who are reading this that find me morally objectionable because I don't want to hang people before establishing that they are inflicting true harm in another being's life, or that just assume I must touch kids myself because I'm not jumping on this little bandwagon. People like that scare me.

Let's see how many thumbs down I get. I'll consider it as a badge of honor that I'm able to think for myself in this little bubble of ours, so knock yourself out.

Any one who abuses kids, or other humans or animals ranks pretty high. The second one would be any type of terrorist.
