If you want a budget notebook that can run Vista home premium, I would definitely go with the Toshiba Satellite. Ranging from 800-900 bucks, you get a reliable notebook that can run your everyday tasks well. Overall, the build is solid and very versatile. If you want a good overall notebook under 2,000 bucks, I would go with the Asus notebooks, which you can check out on newegg.com. I would def go with the models having the 7700 nvidia graphics card or ati's x1700 graphics card option. If you want a high-end notebook that just surpasses 2,000 bucks, the Dell e1705 is your best bet. I would customize this Dell notebook with the core 2 duo 7200 cpu, 80 gb hard-drave (7200 rpm), 2 gb ram, 7900 gs graphics card, highest resolution for the 17 inch screen. last of all, if you are into gaming, Dell XPS notebooks are the best value definitely.

In my opinion the best brand to go for with laptops is Asus as they actually produce the motherboards in the laptops so they are responsible for most of the hardware included in a laptop. Not to mention they are reliable, sturdy, and built with nice bios features. To check out some different laptops try going to www.newegg.com they should have many different brands although I advise checking out the Asus ones first as they tend to have fairly high reviews.

I wouldn't buy a laptop at all, low life span and they're not all that great. My sister has a newer Acer, although it's a good laptop as far as technology goes, It's a flimsy piece of crap.

Toshiba are pretty reliable, with good build quality, stay away from Advent at all costs.
