hopefully you dated the letter you gave to him!
if you did then you can prove its his fault but if you didn't then i'm afraid you are stuck with it.

I've been in this situation, I handed my notice into the HR department and they didn't notify payroll. The mistake only came to light when I asked for my P60 or P45 (which ever you get when you leave a job). I was overpaid a month's wages if I remember correctly.
Yes, you will have to pay it back, I was allowed to pay it back bit by bit, so you could try to arrange some kind of direct debit.

I know it sucks and it is you boss's fault. Next time, I'm going to contact all the relevant departments personally to make sure this doesn't happen again. S*** happens, but you can learn from it.

Hope it all works out

It is your boss's fault and if you dated the letter then you can prove it. Do nothing, it is their fault and they can't take the money back from you. It is very doubtful they would claim against you and if in the unlikely event they did, then the law is on your side. Good luck and stop worrying!

Hi there,

You mean they've over-paid you a month's wages, and now they want it back?

Unfortunately, yes, you will most likely have to pay it back. I know it's hard to keep track of when you are supposed to have your money, etc, but they will just ask you 'why didn't you notice you had an extra £561 in your account'? You need to give them a call and explain your situation - they may arrange for you to pay it back in small parts.

Severance pay. Keep it, it's intentional. You must know something good.
