it can play dvd & play cd.but cant burn cd or dvd

Ok, A "DVD ROM" (Rom meaning: READ only memory) means that it can only read it from the drive. So, in effect it can only play, and copy (onto your hard drive, not any other media like CD, CD-r Etc.) and that's it. If you are looking for a drive, i would consider an "all in one" drive, mine plays, burns, copies and anything else you can imagine (CD, CD-R, CD+R, DVD, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD RAM) and it was only around 30 bucks, and it has lightscribe which i think right now is irrelivant. It is also important to realize that although you may have a drive capable of reading CD-ROM, CD-RW, and CD-R discs, it still may be unable to read DVD discs. However, a DVD+R or DVD+RW drive is also capable of reading DVD discs.

A DVD rom only plays dvd's and cd's. If you want to do all of the above you need a DVD burner.

CD ROM only plays CDs
CD Burner makes CDs
DVD ROM only plays DVDs and plays CDs
DVD combo drives only play DVDs and make CDs
(sometimes they are called DVD/CD Writer on the box but only burn CD when you read the fine print.)
DVD (or DVD/CD) burners play and make both DVDs and CDs

No, dvd rom is only a player. If it were drw (digital rewriter) it would be ableto burn dvd roms. Or if it were a combo it would be able to write a cds.

a dvd rom drive will only read and play dvd rom and video and cds... it won't do anything else...

If you mean a DVD-R, then yes, but a basic DVD (ROM) will only read.
