Who cares. What ever they earn on the court they deserve it, its does not have to be made public. Tell your friend he/she is pretty nosy.

It will be a fierce contest between Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams. Maria earns a whopping 20 million USD a year from all the contracts and fashion stuff, and another 2-3.5 million from the tennis circuit. Serena was the highest paid female athlete until 2004, when she was overthrown by Maria. Still, I think she easily does about 16-17 million USD a year. All in all, I will give the No.1 spot to Serena, bcuz she has been around for a longer time. There is no chance a male player is out there at the top, because no one of them, except perhaps Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, earns even 10 million USD a year.

It's interesting that both the male and female tennis players who currently have made the most money playing tennis are from the tiny country of Switzerland.
For men, Roger Federer currently has $29,901,828 as of March 28th, 2007. He made almost 8 million last year alone, which in tennis standards is unheard of. I think the only two players who have made more are Agassi at 31 million and Sampras with 43 million.
Martina Hingis currently has the most prize money for active women. She just crossed the $20 million dollar mark this week, making her only the 4th woman to do so joining Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, and Lindsay Davenport.
When in comes to players who are rich because of endorsements who have to look at who is big now. When Serena was #1, she signed a $12 million with Puma. Maria Sharapova and Andy Roddick also have some pretty big endorsement deals.
And you can't forget about Anna Kournikova who was one of the few tennis players to make it onto the Forbes list of wealthiest celebrities because she made millions off of tennis, but even more from modeling.
