I'm a gadget geek, and I've owned dozens of mp3 players, starting back when they were the size of a portable CD player and twice the weight. And my favourite... the Archos Gmini XS 202.
I have a personal media player for videos and a pocket PC to view pictures, and my phone has a camera, so I just wanted the basics. An mp3 player that held my 17GB music collection, fitted in my bra when I didn't have a pocket to keep it in, didn't require any special software, and could read my dozens of Winamp playlists. And that's what I got.
I've had it over a year now, and I've used it almost every day on the 2 mile walk to work and back. It's been dropped, sweated on, synched up to five different computers, had music files dragged on and off, been borrowed by my incredibly destructive children, had green tea spilled on it, been rattled around in my handbag and the basket of my bike, used as a portable hard dive when I needed to install several pieces of software on my work computer, and recharged about 100 times. And it's still as shiny and perfect as it was the day I took it out of the box. Even the battery life is still in almost-perfect condition.
I honestly cannot say enough good things about this mp3 player. If someone is looking for a small 20GB mp3 player and doesn't need the frills... this is the one.

I'm gonna go against the clear trend here and say that the Zen Vision:M is the best MP3 player.
However, I used to own an iPod - the 4th Generation iPod (black and white screen) - but it died a year ago. Firstly the battery gave out and I replaced the battery, fine. Good! Then a month later, the hard drive gave out - got a new one from eBay, but now both are corrupt for some weird reason.... I am able to use an iPod, but I dislike them and do not wish to own one, unless I get it for free!
My Creative Zen Vision:M (ZVM) has a better quality screen when compared the the iPod Video - 5th Gen. The ZVM is FAR more flexible than the iPod. I did buy music in iTunes, but I just burnt that to disc and re-imported it as MP3s and put them on my Zen!! (on 11 CDs!) - anyway, the features on the ZVM are way better and it's cheaper! FM Radio, Microphone more options! - sure it's a bit chunkier but the features are extremely useful and great. That's why the Zen Vision:M is better than the iPod and many other MP3 players!!
So... ha!

I have a creative zen vision:m and very happy with it. I mainly bought it because it's so compatible to so many video formats as opposed to just mp4 for a certain other mp3 player…
Vision:m is a simple plug and play if you wanna add music or video to someone's computer or download them from somewhere. No need to go through itunes.
plus you can also use it as a portable harddrive from 512mb up to 16gb, all your choice.
It also has a radio, mic, photos (colors are a lot better than video ipods, mainly due to better screen and more colors, ipod just look faded) and the calender and contacts can be synced to outlook express which is really handy.

Are you aiming strictly for a music player or are there additional features you are interested in? iPods are great for a strictly music player. Other MP3 brands such as Samsung and Sansa have additional features such as FM radio, voice recorders on some models, and video capability on models comparable to the iPod Nano. So it depends on what features you want in an MP3 player. My favorite is still the iPod because I don't need the additional features listed and I feel they are one of the easiest MP3 players to use. Plus they look nice compared to some of the Samsung, Sansa, and the Microsoft Zune

I've had a chance to use a few different types and Apple iPod's are the best, by far!
The iPod is fun and easy to use, iTunes is easy too, and it looks good (although I personally don't like the nano that much as it just looks too fragile - I'm afraid I'd break it!!!) Another great feature is the masses of online help - anytime I've needed to learn how to do anything with the iPod or iTunes I found all the information on the Apple website.

I would recommend the iPod Video. My friends have had iPods (from Gen 1 onwards) for years and I own a new Generation iPod Video. We have had no problems with either the iPod players or iTunes at any time. The build quality is also to be applauded. iPods have not change much externally from the original 1st generation, how many players have remained the same externally for so long and are still so successful ?

I think the iPod Video denominates the Mp3 market at the moment for its skinny body and nice glossy finish. It can hold the same as a creative ZEN but is only half the size. 7,500 songs that's enough thanks!!!!! However a Zune is very nice looking and has very cool features like be able to listen to others music etc. iPod is the one for me that's why me and my brother both have one, I,ll admit it can do with a few more features like an equaliser which actually makes a difference. Still an awesome gadget and gets my vote!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can tell you two players that I would avoid like the plague:
Dell- Terrible customer service, pretty bad MP3 player that broke within a year and would have cost me the price of the player itself to fix
Creative- When it works its a great player but I can't seem to get it to ever stay charged. Whenever I leave it plugged in, I take it to the gym and it dies almost immediately. Piece of garbage.

My Ipod Nano is by far the best of the 3 I've had in every respect. I was almost pleased when my previous MP3 was stolen as it was so awkward to download stuff onto. Only thing I thought I'd miss is the radio - (Ipods don't have them tho you can buy an add-on) but as my mobile phone has one and I can download podcasts to the Nano anyway I don't mind that at all.
It wasn't cheap but worth every penny.

I love my Gmini xs 202s. It's got 20GB which is pretty much my whole family's cd collection. It's really simple to drag and drop tracks using Windows media 10, and I like the way you can see all the song details in one clear screen - eg. how long it lasts, how far into it you are, what's coming up next, who wrote it etc. I had one freaky moment when it froze, but just holding the off button down for 15 secs clears that. It was much cheaper than an iPod, recharges from the mains (no batteries!!!) and you're not restricted to just ipod songs. It's sturdy but doesn't weigh much.
So far - and I've had it nearly a year - I'm happy! (also, got mine from Amazon - check them out for deals)
