Torts and Hermit crabs have two different needs. One needs a dry climate, the other a wet one. The hermit crab will hurt the tort. Hermit crabs can pull in their shells, but torts can only pull in so much, and still have skin exposed. THe crab will think its food, and pick at it. And yes you can have small and large hermit crabs living together. I have an extra large hermit crab and a tiny living together. I know many people who have the same. For more info on crabs look up the CSJ, or the HCA Both awsome message boards.

Hermit Tortoise

Um, first off let me start by listing the animals I have that live in my *room*. 1 water dragon, 3 russian torts, 1 RES, 1 western Painted turtle, 8 hermit crabs, 9 hissing cockroaches, 4 bettas(diff tanks!), 55 gal aquarium with many fish, and sometimes, a poodle. I have not had any ill side effects with owning this many kritters, except that I'm running out of room for all thier different cages and needs. And everyone asks me how my zoo is going and when I'll be open for customers.... So there's nothing wrong with it as long as you take care of all of them like they are people. They need food and water and all the other stuff. If you're neglecting them, you shouldn't have them.

Now, a tortoise can live in the backyard during summer. Make sure it is escape proof, animals cant get in it, and the spot you choose will not flood as most tortoises will drown or get pneumonia(yes, they can get it and it costs a bunch to fix). Make sure there is shade and if you dont want them digging burrows in the ground, get a tote, dig it in the ground, and fill it with dirt. Then start your own 'burrow' by digging a hole. They will graze on grass, but feed them twice a week.

As for the hermit crab, it needs humidity so its modifyed gills wont dry out. Its best to keep them in a glass aquarium with a lid covered in saran wrap to keep the moisture in. So compared to a tortoise, land hermits live in an 'ocean'. Tortoises do well with humidity commonly found in houses and wont have ill side effects if left in an open air enviroment, which is the best.

Never put a tortoise in a glass aquarium, it doesn't get enough ventilation and torts dont understand the concept of 'glass' and 'dont walk thru it'.

Good luck, practice responsible pet ownership, and dont feed iceburg lettuce.

Uhhh....

Lessee... tortoise: dry land, warm weather, either really high or really low humidity animal.

Hermit crab: wet land, high humidity, warm weather animal.

It would take a REALLY big tank to offer both animals what they want. There is a reason you rarely see them together in the wild.

Tortoises can easily live in the back yard if their needs are met.

They should be OK living together - I don't think tortoises would try to eat a crab. At worst, you're out a cheap crab, right?

I've seen people keeping tortoises in their backyard out here in CA, but you should check with your local pet store about weather related issues where you live. Also, keep in mind that there are burrowing species of tortoise - that wouldn't work, would it?

no do not put a crab and a turtle together one is gonna die!
Also Yes as long as the tortoise has proper shade and wire to protect it from predators also remember to have the wood or wire at least a foot down in the ground .

I have no idea. I don't own crabs or a tortoise. I do have 11 leopard geckos, 4 mali uromastyx, 1 sand fish skink, 2 blue tongues skinks, a bearded dragon, a tokay gecko, 4 fire belly toads, 2 fire belly newts, 6 African ciclids, 2 algea eaters, 4 guppies, 1 sugar glider.

I wouldn't put them together, as the Tortise can and most likly will crush the hermit crab..weather it's by accident or not. That's why you can't have larger crab's with small ones.
