Either start out by making your own designs or have someone make your designs. Take your clothes to local consignment shops and see if they will sell your things there. You could also take your clothes to local trendy shops and sell your things there as well. Get a contract if you can, and get these merchants to sign a basic contract allowing you to sell your things there for about a few months if you don't feel very confident or a year if you do. I did this and I was amazed at how many people liked my own personal sense of style. One shop couldn't keep enough of my clothes in it and ran out quickly. Its tough business making a name for yourself because you are always going to have "haters" in this industry, but stick and stay and the rewards will be great. You just have to have you finger on the pulse of the trends and know what is hot! Good luck.

Have you ever gone to buy clothes, and first checked the resume of the designer...me I just buy something that is cool.

If you study fashion design then you will also study the fashion business and learn to make some contacts.

But you can start by just making clothes. Get them out there. For example, start with something, like t-shrits or accessories, that you can sell in markets. Go to the cool areas of town and get your clothes in the independent clothing shops (often you give the clothes for free, then get money if they sell them).

You need to build up contacts and get your name in the street press. Get to know the business. Talk to labels and shops and show them your designs.
